Our Edge

Why we win

Well-funded AI schools are arriving and Islamic schools are growing. We sit where they don't overlap: full-time, faith-rooted, mastery-based, and priced for Bay Area families.

Six advantages

01

First in a market with no incumbent

We found no full-time Shia school in the Bay Area; the nearest are in Houston, Dearborn, Toronto and London. Thaqalayn would be the first we know of, serving a county with 60,000+ Muslims.[7][8][9][5]

02

AI-era academics at less than half Alpha's price

Planned sticker tuition is $32,000 (about $24,000 after average aid) against $75,000 at Alpha School Palo Alto, and close to the $26,301 Santa Clara County private-school average.[16][15]

03

Built on the evidence, including the critique

Plain chatbots cut exam scores 17% while hint-based tutors raised practice 127% with no harm; AI with a teacher present added 0.3 SD. Alpha's Arizona charter scored well below targets. So our tutor gives hints, not answers, and a guide is in every room at 1:12.[28][29][19]

04

Faith built into the platform, not bolted on

Mizan tracks Qur'an memorisation with recorded recitation and teacher review, gives Qur'an and Islamic studies their own daily rings, runs on the Hijri calendar, and answers only from scholar-approved sources with citations — never fatwas. Fiqh follows each family's marja'.

05

A school that proves the platform; a platform that scales the school

The flagship pays the standard licence and proves Mizan daily. Then Mizan reaches the ~190–200 US Shia centers and ~80 in Canada (estimate) at $120 per student, plus Islamic schools and families — thousands of children who will never attend the flagship.[11][12]

06

Complements the AI-school ecosystem instead of fighting it

Mizan connects to Timeback and other apps through OneRoster, Caliper and LTI, so schools can keep the academic tools they like and add the faith layer only Mizan provides. Timeback is a partnership target; developer access has been requested.

What's hard to copy

Scholar-approved content

A scholar board and an approved content library and tutor corpus take time and trust to build.

Community trust

A nonprofit school with separate boards and family-owned data earns trust that a for-profit app alone cannot.

Proof on the ground

A working flagship is the reference every center and school can visit.

Clear-eyed

The well-funded alternative

Alpha's founder has committed $1B to Alpha and Timeback, and Alpha is expanding toward ~50 campuses. We don't compete on capital. We compete on community, faith and price — and we can plug into the same ecosystem.[17][18]
